Gwent receives a Comic Relief Community Fund grant!

Training being delivered at the Gwent YFC County Office.

Gwent YFC has been extremely lucky in receiving a £5000 grant from Comic Relief. The grant is allowing us to purchase new equipment and improve our county space to allow us to deliver a variety of training courses and activities to our members.

The grant funding has enabled us to buy new furniture, lockable storage, cookers for cooking competitions & lessons, new heating, and a TV. The facilities we offer at county are available for our members to use when they need to.

Jemma Rodgers, County Organiser, said “Receiving the grant has helped us on the road to improving the facilities on offer at Gwent YFC and it’s a fantastic opportunity for all our members”.

The funding from Comic Relief has allowed us to use the space for a varied range of activities. Training will be carried outside alongside some more interactive and fun/educational courses e.g. cookery classes.

One of our members Joey Watkins gets published in the farmers guardian!

'Joining a YFC is probably the most important decision I have made in my life'

Joseph Watkins, 27, works on the family farm, helping to manage the farm’s suckler herd. He also has his own small herd of pedigree Herefords and helps with the potato side of the business, which supplies local fish and chip shops.

YFC: Joining a Young Farmers Club (YFC) is probably the most important decision I have made in my adult life, as aged 19 and just out of school I did not have a clue what my future was going to look like.

All of my friends were going off to university and moving onto the next part of their lives, so I decided to join Young Farmers. It was through the club and entering various competitions that I started taking part in the intermediate Brains Trust competition at club, county and then national level. This is where my interest in agriculture really took a hold, so I applied to the Royal Agricultural University for a place on the international business management, food and agribusiness course.
